Anywhere you’re likely to find a pampered pooch, a dog wedding can’t be far behind. Dog weddings are quietly exploding in popularity in areas where fashionable canines abound, such as Hollywood and Japan.
What’s a dog wedding like? It closely resembles a human wedding, often including a dog-safe cake, elaborate wedding attire, a ring presentation ceremony (since the dogs don’t have fingers, the “ring” is usually a decorative collar), a solemn service that binds the two participants together, and ceremonial leave-taking, such as birdseed or rice.
You can throw a dog wedding yourself, or hire a professional dog wedding planner to do it for you. If you live in Japan, you can have your dog married in a swanky dog hotel built just for the purpose, outfitted with beauty salons designed both for dogs and their owners.
On the other hand, if you live in LA, you’ll find plenty of company on dog wedding and birthday gift registries. Pamela Anderson recently threw a florid wedding on the Malibu beach for her two hilariously-paired canine companions, a golden retriever (the bride) and a chihuahua (the groom), complete with bridal bouquets and an avalanche of doggie wedding gifts.
How can you have your own dog wedding? First, make sure that both bride and groom are accepting and calm around other dogs — you don’t want any dogfights at this beautiful event. Give the bridal couple a good washing so they’re clean and sweet-smelling.
Now for the fun part — pick out a stunning wedding gown, veil and tiara for the bride, and a handsome black tux for the groom, possibly including a top hat. If she’s large enough, you can attach a lovely bridal bouquet to Fifi’s back.
Settle on an officiant for your dog wedding. Anyone can do it, though a genuine priest is unlikely to want to. Try a friend of the family or even your vet.
You’ll also need a venue for the ceremony and reception. Outdoors is an ideal choice, one that leaves you many options (parks, backyards) and few clean-up worries, but you can also book a hotel if you check around carefully.
Are you buying special collars for the “ring exchange”? Any blushing bride will want to pore over the exciting designs long before the ceremony. No dog wedding is complete without an eye-catching cake, perhaps covered in candy paw prints, and topped with a keepsake-quality dog cake topper.
Now that you have the logistics worked out, you’ll want to write some special vows for this unique occasion.
“Spike, do you take Fifi to be your wedded wife? Do you promise to share your tennis balls and Kongs, protect her from the UPS man, never growl over the food bowl, and stand fast even during thunderstorms, faithfully trotting by her side so long as you both shall live?”
