Sorry I don't have any advice for you (our cocker spaniel flips out when she sees other dogs, too). But I had to respond to you post because our little girl's name is Phoebe, too! Isn't that strange?!?!?!?

I hope everything went well with your visit and that Phoebe behaved! And good luck with everything!

Oh, and did you have any trouble housebreaking her? We've had a terrible time! She a little over a year old and she's just now getting in the swing of things. (Or maybe we're just now getting the hang of it.)

Okay, unfortunately sometimes these desperate allergies are a byproduct of poor breeding and there isn't a lot you can do about it. Many poodles with this (congenital) problem go on steroids, which definitely reduce suffering in the short term but can also cause problems in the long term.

Other than drugs, what you can do that very well may bring your dog relief is to get him or her completely off commercial dog food. Kibble in a bag has nothing to do with what dogs are biologically meant to eat. Dogs do NOT eat large quantities of grain (and stay healthy). Dogs do NOT eat meat byproducts that are nowhere near safe for consumption. Dogs are meant to eat raw meat and a small quantity of fresh veggies. Yet, these inappropriate ingredients are the ones that show up in commercial "dog food."

Look up the raw food diet for dogs and see if this isn't a gift you can give your pet. Try it out systematically and see if he improves over a month or two. Especially for the small dogs, the cost is very manageable.

At first this involves some time and reading, and it's best to find a raw food for dogs forum where you can ask questions. As you get into it, it gets much easier. And chances are your dog's itching will improve since his system won't be fighting all that allergenic, nutritionally useless corn and rice.

My son's 18=month standard poodle has a desparate itching problem. He rubs his snout frantically against rough surfaces or with his paws. His sides and neck also itch constantly.

Hi, I'm a mother of one and starting to work part time soon and want to become a dog breed. I love dog from little. I want to start breeding Yorkies. The thing is i hear that you need to enter your dogs into dog show to become a breed is that true? I wanted to know if being a breeder, do you need to do it full time or could it be done part time?

                                          thank you for
                                            your time
                                            Christina

Not sure I agree with your tip #5 that "pet insurance serves no purpose." You have to start with an idea of what insurance is for in the first place and that's where many pet owners go wrong.

Pet insurance is designed to protect you financially against unexpected, undesirable, and expensive veterinary medical problems your cat or dog might have. A $50 routine checkup doesn't meet this definition but a $1,500 broken leg does.

So get insurance for the big stuff, not the little stuff that you can save for. Besides which, even $50 a month saved for 5 years might give you $3,000 + interest but it takes discipline and, worst of all, your cat or dog isn't going to wait to get really sick until you've got enough saved up.
