Why should we humans be the only ones who get to dress in support of our favorite teams on game day? These days, there’s really no excuse — a dog owner can buy a snazzy matching football jersey for his pooch, so that both of you can watch the game from your favorite recliner, in style (just keep those jalapeno-studded nachos and beers out of his reach, please).

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Colts fan or a Broncos fan — or even crazy for the Michigan State Spartans. You likely to find a football jersey for dogs in virtually any size and style, any NFL team, and even many of your college football favorites. You’ll find jerseys with short sleeves or long. All come adorned with the name of your team or city, and best of all, with that sporty player number blazing from the back.

NFL Football Jersey for Dogs

With football jerseys, as with any other kind of canine clothes, you want to carefully measure your dog’s back, neck and chest to ensure a proper fit before you order. Figuring out the proper chest size is probably the most important measurement when it comes to getting the right jersey size. What you’re really measuring here is your dog’s girth, or the size of his rib cage. Measure your dog from the spot behind his front legs, where his chest is the deepest, to the area on his back directly above at the nape of his neck. You can do this with either a fabric measuring tape, like professional tailors use, or you can just use a piece of string and then measure the string with a ruler when you’re done.

NFL Pet Set at
JB Wholesale
Pet Supplies

You also want to measure your dog’s back from the base of his neck to the base of his tail. Now you have an official measurement of your dog’s “length.”
(Wasn’t that easy?) Finally, you’ll want to measure the circumference of your dog’s neck, using the same string or fabric measuring tape. These three measurements should get you started when it comes to getting the perfect fit for your canine companion. Now that you have these figures, why not scribble them on an index card and stick them in your wallet so you always have them on hand?

Now it’s time for the fun part — the actual shopping. As you’re sure to learn, football jerseys for dogs are usually easy to care for. Most come in 100% polyester, are machine washable, and typically fit dogs up to 70 pounds (though some selections will fit bigger dogs). They should stay bright and attractive for years.

So the next time you squeeze into your favorite football jersey and grab your remote, toss your dog a bone or similar nacho equivalent, and let him sit in style next to you, all dressed up in a matching jersey designed just for him.

Paul Duxbury

You spoil your pooch as close to rotten as you can get, don’t you? Hey, who doesn’t? It’s almost impossible not to, with those adorable, big, beautiful eyes, the little lashes, and the soft fur just behind the ears, most dogs really beg to be spoiled.

But what can you really do? There are all of those new doggie day spas, doggie day cares, and other doggie luxury services, but how often can you really afford things like that? I mean, most people rarely have enough cash in the bank to get themselves a surprise manicure and pedicure, much less spring for their pups to get a quadripedicure. You give her a few scratches behind the ears, rub her belly, and maybe give her a massage and splurge on some gourmet treats, but you have to pay rent and eat each month. Your budget just doesn’t allow for constant spoiling of your dog!Or does it?

The happy fact is, you can make spa-quality shampoos, fragrances, and skin conditioners whenever you want for a lot less money than you think. Wouldn’t your pup love to have an at-home spa treatment? Give these recipes a shot the next time you want to pamper that pup:

Aromatic Dry Shampoo

250 ml (1 cup) cornmeal 250 ml (1 cup) baby/talcum powder 5 ml (1 tsp) rosemary 5 ml (1 tsp) lavender

Combine all of the ingredients in a large, airtight container and let them sit overnight. This will allow the rosemary and lavender to scent the other two ingredients lightly. When ready, sprinkle generously over your dog and brush it into her fur by working your fingers against the lay of her coat. Once it’s worked in thoroughly, use your fingers or a hard rubber brush to massage her coat in the direction of the fur but working in circles. Brush until the mixture is completely out of the coat. Your baby will smell great, the powder and cornmeal help absorb excess oil and dirt to clean her, and she won’t have had to go through the trauma of having a full bath! How great is that?

Herbal Shampoo

470 ml (2 cups) purified water 10 ml (1 tbsp) rosemary 10 ml (1 tbsp) orange zest 30 ml (2 tbsp) chamomile 10 ml (1 tbsp) lavender oil 120 ml (1/2 cup) baby shampoo

Bring water to a boil, and then remove from heat. Add all of the herbs, cover the dish, and allow it to steep overnight. Strain the mixture and stir in the oils, then gently add the shampoo until well mixed. This shampoo should be kept refrigerated for freshness when not in use, but use about 2 tablespoons every time you wash your dog for a sweet-smelling, great treat for both of you. Don’t forget to give her a little massage while you’re rubbing it in!

Lemon Flea Dip

3 lemons 940 ml (1 quart) water 60 ml (1/4 cup) baking soda 5 ml (1 tsp) herbal shampoo

Cut the lemons into eighths while bringing the water to a rolling boil. Add the lemons, boil for one hour, then cover and let the mixture steep overnight. Strain the solution then add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Warm to a tepid temperature before applying. To spoil your pup with the application, dip a sponge into the water and drizzle it slowly over her coat, then use your fingers to work it in using slow, deliberate circles focusing on points like the hips and shoulders. Give her a good massage she deserves it! This shampoo uses citrus oil to help repel fleas, but the warm water and baking soda also help to soothe any existing irritations she may have.

by Mark Eckenrode

Do you have at least one framed photo of your dog somewhere in your house… or maybe in your wallet? Is your dog pretty darn close to being the very center of your universe? Do you love spoiling him, respond to his every whimper and cry, and spend hundreds of dollars on gourmet treats? To say that dogs are man’s best friend is anything but a cliché. You might be the most miserable person in the world without a friend to your name… but your dog will treat you like royalty every time you walk through the door. So how do you repay that unconditional love and devotion? There are hundreds of different ways!

1. Spoil him rotten.

A lot of people spend a lot of money at chic pet boutiques, dressing their dogs in hundred-dollar sweaters and paying for meticulous pawdicures. They buy diamond studded collars and give their dogs rooms all to themselves. You probably don’t have the budget for things like that, right? You can still spoil your dog with simple, everyday things that cost you the absolute minimum. Next time your pooch needs a bath, focus on giving him a massage while you’re working the shampoo into his coat. Take him out for a drive once each week and dress according to the weather so you can open a window and let his head hang out, his ears flapping in the breeze. Or you can”¦

2. Stuff him silly.

Your dog lives by food! It drives every thought he has, every impulse in his body. But you’re more rational, you know that food needs to be both delicious and nutritious to make sure he has as long and happy a life as possible. Why not try making some homemade treats and dog food that are absolutely packed with all of the vitamins and nutrients he needs? Bake him a delicious, healthy cake for his next birthday, then share a few cookies with him!

3. Prepare for the worst.

If you know exactly what to do in a tough situation or an emergency, you infinitely increase the chances that your dog will be around for a long time to come. Do you know what to do when he’s choking? You should lay your dog on his side and place one hand on his back and the other on his stomach just behind his rib cage. Using the stomach hand, push in and toward the throat twice, but without too much force. If you can see a foreign object, sweep your fingers through his mouth to remove it. If he’s still choking, place your mouth over his nose and exhale until his chest rises. Repeat once, and then thrust two more times. Continue until he coughs out the obstruction. Now consider what would happen if he started to choke and you had no clue what to do, then ended up spending 10 minutes calling vets and driving him there. Making sure you’re prepared to care for his health and wellbeing is a great way to show him how much you love him.

4. Speak his language.

Unless you believe in pet psychics, there’s really no way for you to read your pooch’s mind and figure out exactly what she’s thinking. The good news is that, like many dog owners, the problems you’re having can probably be traced to one simple thing: you’re trying to communicate with your dog from a human standpoint, and your dog isn’t a human. Rather than saying “no,” a word that doesn’t really mean anything to a dog, try growling in a deep, throaty voice the next time you’re unhappy with something he’s done. He’ll get the message immediately and you won’t have to go through a big, drawn-out battle of wills. He’ll appreciate you meeting him halfway!

These are just a few of the ways in which you can show your dog how much he means to you, and I’d love to share hundreds more with you. That’s why I’ve assembled the DogMatters.com Megapack, a collection of my hottest dog care titles.
During the last few years, more and more pet owners are pampering their pets by cooking special meals for them and giving them birthday gifts. So, why not go one step further and organize a dog party celebration?

By Shirley Purdy

Did you know that a dog party celebration is a wonderful pick-me-up?

When women feel down and need a bit of pampering, we can retreat to our favorite spa and indulge in being thoroughly spoilt. Sometimes we go to the shops and spend money on totally unnecessary things… but it feels good! Maybe we even organise a party for a group of friends, adding in lots of our favorite food and drink.

Our pets, on the other hand, don’t get the opportunity to go off to the spa and be spoilt, unfortunately. However, you can now spoil your four-legged, furry friend by organizing a party for them, giving them the similar kind of tender loving care.

During the last few years, more and more pet owners are pampering their pets by cooking special meals for them and giving them birthday gifts. So, why not go one step further and organize a dog party celebration?

This is also a great idea, because your four-legged guests will all be accompanied by their owners… and hey presto, two parties in one!!

Did you know… 93% of pet owners, in a survey, stated they felt that love and attention contributed more to their pet’s quality of life than anything else. Holding a dog party celebration is a great way to pay back your pet all that loyalty, pleasure and enjoyment.

As a long-time pet owner, I’ve learned the importance of the family pet. Because of all they give us, most dog owners will do more for their pet than for themselves, and are always looking for ways to pamper and shower their pets with affection.

All dogs love to romp and play with other dogs. They also have a keen interest in eating tasty goodies, almost without restriction. So, indulge your pet with flair — maybe organize a fun theme party and dress your pooch in party clothes!

It’s not hard to organize a mixed party, which includes your doggie guests. Remember one “Golden Rule””¦ this is not the time to introduce pets that are not familiar with each other. Why not invite friends and neighbors only, as your dog will already be friends with them”¦ well most anyway! This way you can be sure that the pets will interact while the owners mingle and chat.

If you’re going to have your dog party celebration in your own backyard, why not bake your own special treats — even make the birthday cake. Homemade snacks aren’t difficult to make, and will leave your pet feeling happy and appreciated. Try making some crispy bacon dog treats, or even some frozen dog-friendly popsicles to pamper your favorite furry friend.

Maybe you have a small back yard and you want to let your doggie guests have more space to romp around. If so, try the local park (or dog park) and have a picnic party for your pooch. You can make up individual party packs for each doggie guest. With all the running around, they’ll be thirsty, so make sure you take a few water bowls and plenty of bottled water.

Have a box with an assortment of toys for your doggie guests to play with. This enables the dog owners to have fun with their own pet and all the other party dogs! Everybody will be throwing a ball (or stick), skimming a Frisbee, enjoying a tug-of-war or just simply running around with the dogs.

What a great way to be silly and not feel at all guilty… enjoy your dog party soon!

Some say it started with the Taco Bell dog. A five hundred million dollar ad campaign featured a talking Chihuahua which continually repeated the slogan, “Yo quiero Taco Bell,” which is Spanish for “I want Taco Bell.” Then came the Legally Blond films and the unstoppable Bruiser. The topping on the cake was when Paris Hilton appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine and later tried living The Simple Life on Fox TV with Tinkerbell, her pet Chihuahua. Celebrities have discovered what many pet owners already knew: Chihuahuas are the best dogs to own and care for. In the process, they’ve set off a Chihuahua Craze that is reaching towering proportions.

When most people think of Celebrities and their toy dogs, Yorkshire Terriers, Toy Poodles, Pekinese, Lhasas and Shih Tzus usually come to mind. That’s because famous folks like Audrey Hepburn, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Mia Farrow were regularly photographed with their beloved pets. In Audrey”˜s case, it was a Yorkie. In her early days of fame, Mia Farrow was rarely seen out in public without her Lhasa. Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor loved to walk through the hot spots of Beverly Hills and be photographed with a multitude of Toy Poodles, Pekinese and Shih Tzus. But times have changed!

The always innovative Madonna may have set the standard for change not long ago when she sported her beloved Chihuahua, Chiquita, for a press photo op. Noah Wyle, one of the hot stars of ER, was recently photographed with his Chihuahua while on holiday. Jennifer Lopez has also joined the exclusive club of famous Chihuahua owners. Younger celebrities like Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, Paris Hilton, Christina Ricci, Jordon, Reese Witherspoon and members of Simple Plan have found themselves attracted to these fabulous canines and brought a huge amount of attention to them.

Chihuahuas make great pets because they are very low maintenance, the world’s smallest dogs and longest lived breed. Celebs love the fact that Chihuahuas prefer the company of humans more then they enjoy being with other animals and can easily accompany their owners everywhere. Chihuahuas love to be held or carried around in their very own shoulder bag and that makes them especially attractive to busy celebrities and people who are always on the move.

Unlike most toy dog breeds, the Chihuahua is not a created one. The first widespread mention of Chihuahuas occurred during the mid to late 1800’s in weekly or monthly tabloids that specialized in tales of the American West. Highly fictionalized accounts of the small dogs spread by these publications claimed they were actually a mix of rodent and canine or had been magically created by Medicine Men. In reality, Chihuahuas were first noticed along the Arizona-Mexico border by settlers, ranchers and those passing through. This lead to the animals becoming originally-known as Arizona Dogs. Once it began obvious that these cute little dogs were actually coming out of the Chihuahua region of Mexico where they had been discovered in the early 1800’s, the regional name stuck.

For the first time ever this past year, Chihuahuas have made the top ten list of most registered or licensed dogs in many areas of the USA. There can be no doubt that part of their popularity comes from the media exposure the breed has received and the fact that big-name celebrities are favoring the breed. But it also has to do with the fact that Chihuahuas are small, very easy to care for and live a long time.

Most Chihuahuas eat dry dog food and feed once every couple of hours or as their hunger moves them. A small, full bowl of dry food and dish of water easily gets them through an entire day. Chihuahuas are known for being healthy, hearty dogs that do well in virtually any situation. They can easily deal with temperatures of forty to ninety degrees Fahrenheit. When it gets a bit too chilly, doggie clothes solve the problem. When it gets too hot, Chihuahuas are always happy to enjoy their owner’s air conditioning. Most have few health issues and live from fifteen to nineteen years of age, with an average lifespan of sixteen years.

Those wanting to breed Chihuahuas are often surprised to find that they can give birth up to twice a year, normally have from one to five puppies and take just sixty-five days to give birth. Few have problem births and the survival rate of pups is very high compared to other toy breeds. Chihuahua puppies are ready to be adopted by eight weeks.

Because celebrities are constantly exposed to new situations and always on the go, they can appreciate the fact that most Chihuahuas tend to attach themselves emotionally to one person or family and rarely bolt if given the opportunity. All Chihuahua owners appreciate the intelligence of the breed. They are very easy to train and adjust well to change. In areas where it’s legal, Chihuahuas walk obediently near their owners without a leash.

Chihuahuas come from the same parent breed of dogs that Chinese Cresteds, Mexican Hairless Dogs and Xolos do. These are known to be the most ancient of all dog breeds still existing today. Drawings of what appear to be Chihuahuas are found throughout the world, some being thousands of years old. This makes us wonder when and where the Breed actually originated? Most Chihuahuas are either shorthair or longhair, come in an amazing variety of colors and purebreds tend to weigh from under a pound to no more then six pounds fully grown.

As Chihuahuas are featured in more and more films, television shows and become the beloved pets of an ever growing list of the rich and famous, we should all remember that they are more then just the hot breed of the moment. Chihuahuas are great pets that are very loyal to their owners. If you are planning to adopt a Chihuahua, do so because the breed is attractive to your needs, desires and lifestyle, not because Paris owns one.

Anywhere you’re likely to find a pampered pooch, a dog wedding can’t be far behind. Dog weddings are quietly exploding in popularity in areas where fashionable canines abound, such as Hollywood and Japan.

What’s a dog wedding like? It closely resembles a human wedding, often including a dog-safe cake, elaborate wedding attire, a ring presentation ceremony (since the dogs don’t have fingers, the “ring” is usually a decorative collar), a solemn service that binds the two participants together, and ceremonial leave-taking, such as birdseed or rice.

You can throw a dog wedding yourself, or hire a professional dog wedding planner to do it for you. If you live in Japan, you can have your dog married in a swanky dog hotel built just for the purpose, outfitted with beauty salons designed both for dogs and their owners.

On the other hand, if you live in LA, you’ll find plenty of company on dog wedding and birthday gift registries. Pamela Anderson recently threw a florid wedding on the Malibu beach for her two hilariously-paired canine companions, a golden retriever (the bride) and a chihuahua (the groom), complete with bridal bouquets and an avalanche of doggie wedding gifts.

How can you have your own dog wedding? First, make sure that both bride and groom are accepting and calm around other dogs “” you don’t want any dogfights at this beautiful event. Give the bridal couple a good washing so they’re clean and sweet-smelling.

Now for the fun part “” pick out a stunning wedding gown, veil and tiara for the bride, and a handsome black tux for the groom, possibly including a top hat. If she’s large enough, you can attach a lovely bridal bouquet to Fifi’s back.

Settle on an officiant for your dog wedding. Anyone can do it, though a genuine priest is unlikely to want to. Try a friend of the family or even your vet.

You’ll also need a venue for the ceremony and reception. Outdoors is an ideal choice, one that leaves you many options (parks, backyards) and few clean-up worries, but you can also book a hotel if you check around carefully.

Are you buying special collars for the “ring exchange”? Any blushing bride will want to pore over the exciting designs long before the ceremony. No dog wedding is complete without an eye-catching cake, perhaps covered in candy paw prints, and topped with a keepsake-quality dog cake topper.

Now that you have the logistics worked out, you’ll want to write some special vows for this unique occasion.

“Spike, do you take Fifi to be your wedded wife? Do you promise to share your tennis balls and Kongs, protect her from the UPS man, never growl over the food bowl, and stand fast even during thunderstorms, faithfully trotting by her side so long as you both shall live?”

It isn't just looks, personality or being able to do tricks on command that makes a dog a prime candidate to become one of the new breed of celebrity dogs ... other skills are required, too. Let's examine what it takes to be a celebrity dog in a little more detail.

So what are “˜celebrity dogs,’ and does your dog have what it takes to be featured in a new, big-name cinema flick?

If your dog enjoys good looks and a winning personality, and even has that special “˜something’ the French call je ne sais quoi, then your dog may make a great prospect for being one of the up-and-coming stars. But it isn’t just looks, personality or being able to do tricks on command that makes a dog a prime candidate to become one of the new breed of celebrity dogs … other skills are required, too. Let’s examine what it takes to be a celebrity dog in a little more detail.

One of the most valuable traits that your dog can have, if he wants to have a shot at the silver screen, is patience. If he’s going to be a successful star, your dog needs to be able to repeat the same thing over and over again. There’s plenty of standing around and then having to re-do scenes, something even the human actors find difficult, so celebrity dogs need to avoid falling victim to boredom too easily. They also need to grasp that if they’re patient and well-behaved, there will be plenty of reward for them over the long term. This takes a good deal of training.

Secondly, any successful canine star or dog actor needs to be able to take direction from complete strangers, and follow these instructions to the letter. A dog actor might also be required to undertake activities in strange surroundings, and work closely with even more complete strangers (the actors and crew), so your dog will need to feel comfortable in a variety of environments and not scare easily with unfamiliar handlers.

Thirdly, if your dog is to be a famous and in-demand canine star, then he’ll need to be relatively insensitive to sound. For instance, your dog will need to be able to take loud environmental bangs and crashes without being fazed by them. This is particularly true if your dog is working on a film set.

Alternatively, your dog might need to learn to pretend to be sleeping without flinching while his acting partners move through the scene … a common scenario when working on the set of a mini-series or soap opera, and one that requires great effort on the part of your dog.

Of course, not all celebrity dogs are working dogs. The final way to make a celebrity of your dog is to become a celebrity yourself. Make the covers of preteen and Hollywood magazines, attend and throw parties with plenty of “swag,” develop a self-branded empire filled with perfumes, fashion, films, top hit singles and reality TV programs, and your dog might become a celebrity simply from being associated with you, particularly if he’s tiny, cute and can be dressed in adorable clothes.

This is the path to dog celebrity taken by four-footed stars like Paris Hilton’s Bambi and Tinkerbell (present and former Chihuahua), Britney Spears’ Bit Bit and Lacy Loo (Chihuahua and Maltese), Jessica Simpson’s Daisy (Poodle-slash-Maltese mix), Kate Hudson’s Clara Bo (Pomeranian), Star Jones’ Pinky (Maltese), Pamela Anderson’s Star and Luca (Golden Retriever, Chihuahua), Nicolette Sheridan’s Oliver (Golden Retriever) and Hilary Duff’s Lola and Macy (Chihuahua and Pocket Pomeranian).
