The Importance of Dog Shampoo

Dog shampoo is an integral component of caring for your dog. Although it’s an unpleasant fact that sometimes you have to deal with your dog strolling in with muddy paws, smelling of the garbage can, or having raised a sweat from chasing the cat, a quality dog shampoo will rid your dog of all of these odors. Plus it will moisturize his skin, bring a shine to his coat, soothe any itches or under-fur rashes, and in some cases, even protect your little buddy against fleas and ticks.

Even if you don’t have time to give your dog a full wash with dog shampoo, you can keep some wipes on hand that contain concentrated, waterless dog shampoos. These are great for giving your dog a quick cleanse.

Specialized, medicated dog shampoos are particularly helpful if your dog could use an insecticide to help him combat ticks and fleas. Medicated dog shampoos can be particularly vital for the long-haired breeds of dogs. These kinds of shampoos should be worked into lather thoroughly, then spread and massaged deeply into your dog’s coat – this will ensure that it reaches your dog’s skin. After the massage, you need to be sure to rinse out medicated dog shampoo very thoroughly, especially if your dog has a tendency to lick, since you don’t want him ingesting any shampoo.

You can also purchase brightening shampoos that are manufactured specifically for dogs that have white or very fair hair – ideal for that hard-playing poodle. There are also specialty color-enhancing shampoos for dogs with brown and black hair, which are actually quite similar to the hair colorants we use on our own hair — although obviously the ingredients are different, and gentler.

Also in a similar fashion to humans, you can purchase dog shampoos designed to detangle and condition your dog’s hair. These shampoos can make it much easier to maintain a nicely groomed dog, making him less likely to gather bugs, leaves and so on in his fur since there are fewer tangles or knots to catch pesky critters and dirt.

If you want to care for your dog with loads of love and tenderness, then finding the right dog shampoo for your regular grooming practice is one of the keys. Your dog will love the feeling of being fresh and clean — and though he may not say it in words, you’ll still get the message when he thanks you for your kindness.
